According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) surveyed Australia's long coastline at intervals of 100 kilometers and collected the world's largest marine debris data. CSIRO researcher Dennis Hadtis said: "Three-quarters of the rubbish near the coastline is made of plastic, most of which is not from the high seas, but from Australia, mainly concentrated near the city." Part of a three-year marine waste survey and education project, co-sponsored by Australia Watch Earth and CSIRO and Shell Oil. The investigation found that there are two main reasons for pollution: littering and illegal dumping.
Garbage found includes glass and cans, plastic bottles, bags, balloons, rubber parts, metal, fishing gear and other items that people leave at sea or thrown into the sea. According to the survey, marine debris not only causes navigational accidents, but also causes corals to suffocate, introduce aggressive species, endanger tourism and kill wild animals.
It is reported that sea turtles will mistake soft and transparent plastics for edible jellyfish. About one-third of the world's turtles die from plastics. Birds eat almost anything, and plastic is found in the abdomen of 43% of the birds surveyed. Forecasts indicate that 95% of a total of 2050 species of birds may have ingested plastic. In addition, the chemical substances contained in the garbage will also penetrate into the marine ecosystem, indirectly causing harm to wild animals. Therefore, the danger of plastics to marine microorganisms is quite large.
