New Catalysts Produce Hydrogen Energy Efficiently

US researchers reported in the new issue of Advanced Energy Materials that they have developed a new type of low-cost electrolyzed water catalyst that will help produce hydrogen energy efficiently.

Energy conversion is the key to the development of clean energy. Wind power and solar power generation are intermittent, and the power grid needs continuous and stable input, so wind power and solar power generation can not be directly connected to the power grid, but need media to be stored or converted into other forms of energy. One of the most promising approaches at the moment is to use this energy to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can be used in fuel cells, which is considered to be the most environmentally friendly way to convert electrical energy into chemical fuels.

However, this method has not been widely used so far because the catalyst required for the electrolysis of water mainly comes from rare precious metals such as platinum and rhodium. In this context, researchers from Washington State University reported that they added lower-priced copper nanoparticles to the cobalt framework, resulting in a relatively inexpensive new catalyst.

The researchers used theoretical simulations to calculate and experimentally test the efficiency of this catalyst. Compared with existing commercial catalysts, the use of this new type of catalyst has resulted in increased oxygen production and flat hydrogen production. In the next step, researchers hope to improve the stability and efficiency of new catalysts.

Researchers said that the new catalyst can greatly reduce the cost of using water electrolysis to store renewable energy and help to pave the way for the development of clean energy. (Reporter Guo Shuang)
