In surgery, the ruptured, ruptured blood vessels are always "needlework", but sutures are not suitable for particularly small blood vessels. US researchers have invented a new method that can use "biological glue" to bind small blood vessels and avoid some of the side effects of sutures.
A team of researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the United States reported that they used two ready-made substances: the organic polymer "Poloxamer 407" and the bio-adhesive "multiple wiper." The former is used to stretch the two ends of the blood vessel and the latter is used for bonding.
Poloxamer 407 is non-toxic to humans and has been approved for use as an adjunct to some pharmaceutical and personal care products. It has a unique property that it is a liquid at a low temperature, becomes a solid after being heated, and the process is reversible. The new method takes advantage of this feature. The researchers heated the substance above body temperature, turning it into a solid that was used to open the blood vessels. When the temperature drops, it becomes liquid and does not block blood vessels.
The researchers said that their experiments on animals showed that the new method is more efficient than traditional vascular sutures, and it can join blood vessels as thick as 0.2 mm. It is difficult to treat blood vessels less than 1 mm in diameter with sutures. In addition, injury caused by needlework can cause intimal hyperplasia or inflammation in blood vessels and increase the risk of vascular embolization. The new method does not have this risk.
Related papers were published on the 28th in the British "Nature-Medical" magazine online edition. This method also requires more animal testing, followed by human trials, and it can be put into practice only after it is confirmed to be safe and effective. The researchers believe that because the two substances used have previously been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the rate at which the method can be clinically applied may be rapid.
