According to a report by Reuters on September 25 in Kiev, the office of Ukrainian President Yanukovych said here today that Russian President Medvedev and Ukrainian President Yanukovych held talks on the supply of natural gas later on September 24. The negotiations have achieved "significant progress."
Ukraine believes that according to the current gas supply agreement, Ukrainian payments for Russian gas are too expensive. The previous dispute over natural gas prices between Ukraine and Russia had caused Russia's natural gas supply to Europe to be interrupted. Russia once said that the Russian side will only re-examine this agreement after Ukraine joins its customs union with Belarus and Kazakhstan. The purpose of Russia’s move is to rule out Kiev’s hopes of reaching a free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU within the year this year.
