Recently, the research team led by Professor Wang Jiannong from the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology has made significant progress in the continuous preparation and performance optimization of carbon nanotube fibers. The prepared fibers not only have high strength, good toughness, but also outstanding electrical properties. The relevant results were published in internationally renowned academic journals.
Since its discovery, carbon nanotubes have long been recognized as the strongest, most rigid, and toughest molecules that people can produce. They are the best thermal and electrical molecular conductors in field effect transistors, transparent electrodes, nanostructures and Functional composite materials, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors and many other fields have broad application prospects. However, in order to better realize the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes and many practical applications, it is necessary to assemble carbon nanotubes into macroscopic materials such as fibers. Therefore, how to continuously prepare carbon nanotube fibers and maintain the excellent performance of single carbon nanotubes has become a common dream of the scientific community and the industry.
In response to the above problems, Professor Wang Jiannong's research group innovatively used floating chemical vapor deposition to continuously prepare carbon nanotube macroscopic cylinders, and in the open atmosphere, the cylinder was directly shredded into fibers by water, and then mechanically rolled. The process improves the compactness of the fiber, and successfully prepares high-strength (3.76-5.53 GPa), high elongation (8%-13%) and high conductivity carbon nanotube fiber materials, and the tensile strength is first achieved, toughness and conductivity. The performance is much better than the level of traditional high-strength carbon fiber.
