The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute and the University of Tokyo have developed a wireless sensor system for chicken farms that can detect whether chickens are suffering from bird flu. The system is installed on chickens, and it can be judged by whether the body temperature and activity changes.
Once chickens have bird flu, their body temperature and activity will change. The system uses acceleration sensors and temperature sensors to measure the amount of activity and body temperature of the chickens. Based on the measured data, it can be judged whether the chicken is sick or not. The system does not need to replace the battery in about 500 days, which is similar to the life of the chicken. To reduce power consumption, dedicated activity sensors and circuits using low-power AD conversion sensor data have been developed. The power consumption of an LSI that determines whether to infect bird flu based on sensor signals is 320 nW.
Production Research Institute stated that in the future it is necessary to further improve the reliability of the active mass sensor. Once the reliability of the sensor is improved, the system can reach a practical level.
