As technology becomes increasingly efficient and cheap, the solar photovoltaic panel industry in the green energy industry has also ushered in a vigorous development. But recently, the research team of the Australian National University (ANU) has just broken the energy efficiency record of solar cells. The researchers said that the energy conversion efficiency of the new perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell they developed has reached 27.7%.

You know that five years ago, the industry record was only 13.7%. Even if it was 25.2% two years ago, AUN ’s new program has grown a lot, and there is potential for continued breakthroughs in the next few years.
In contrast, most commercial solar cells based on silicon materials currently have conversion efficiencies of around 20%. But since both silicon and perovskite can convert solar energy well, the ANU research team decided to combine them.
It is reported that the two materials can absorb light of different wavelengths, of which silicon materials are mainly for red light and infrared light, while perovskite is mainly for blue-green light.
To take full advantage of this feature, the researchers stacked translucent perovskite components on top of silicon components.

In other words, the sunlight will be filtered out of the blue-green band energy, and then absorbed by the red and infrared bands. Such a design can make the top-level design more efficient.
Lead researcher The Duong pointed out that it uses n-butyl ammonium bromide as a new material to coat the perovskite active layer of photovoltaic panels, which is characterized by two-dimensional arrangement.
This material helps reduce defects on the surface of the perovskite active layer, thereby improving the performance of such photovoltaic panels. At present, the research team is actively improving efficiency and catching up with the commercialization process. It is expected that the target of 30% conversion rate can be achieved by 2023.
