Researchers develop wave-powered AUV site system is expected to replace support

According to foreign media New Atlas, although autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are electrically powered, they are usually launched from fuel-fueled support ships. Now researchers are designing a new system to power underwater AUV sites with more environmentally friendly waves to replace these ships.

The setup is officially known as the OPT-Modus-Saab Seaeye underwater vehicle residence solution, and it is based on the OPT PowerBuoy manufactured by Ocean Power Technologies in New Jersey. The device is anchored on the sea floor and floats on the water surface, generating electricity through a piston-like structure located below the water surface. When PowerBuoy swings up and down with the waves to drive the generator, this structure will rise and fall.

In the new system, the submarine cable extending downward from the buoy will provide power and communication data to the battery / docking station on the subsea produced by Modus Seabed Intervention. A Saab Seaeye Sabertooth AUV will autonomously go to the site when performing missions in a specific area. When docked, it will charge the battery and, in addition, it will send and receive data (via buoys) to shore users.

Ultimately, the technology can be used in applications such as long-term environmental monitoring, frequent inspection of subsea equipment, and interaction with subsea assets. The concept has been jointly submitted by partner companies for the US government to consider funding for development and demonstration projects.

Ocean Power Technology said in a press release: "I believe that the OPT / Modus / Saab AUV residence system will have considerable environmental, risk, safety and cost advantages over existing fossil fuel power solutions. This system is novel Because it is a truly autonomous system. Getting rid of ships can reduce carbon emissions and move people to shore, thereby reducing risks and costs, while improving safety. "
