The Argentine authorities approved the commercialization of genetically modified potato Y virus (PVY) potatoes. The genetically modified potato, called TIC-AR233-5, will help growers avoid losses caused by viral infections. Allegedly, the virus can cause a drop in production of up to 70%.
In addition, the potato will help growers use less agrochemicals in their cultivation. The National Agricultural Health Service stated that the product meets all necessary requirements. New potatoes can help growers reduce processing costs and improve the quality of the final product.
After the Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV), PVY is the second most serious potato virus in the world, which is spread by aphids, machinery and tools. In addition, research is being conducted on modified cotton, herbicide-resistant corn and drought-resistant soybeans.
