According to the U.S. news agency, recent research by American scientists has concluded that at the harvest time of switchgrass, more simple ethanol can be produced through a simple pretreatment process.
"The harvested switchgrass has more cellulose," said Young MiKim, a scientist at Purdue University. "But due to the presence of lignin, it is difficult to extract high-quality sugar from cellulose."
Lignin is a rigid substance on the cell wall of plants, which greatly hinders the conversion of cellulose into ethanol. Scientists have developed a new method. When switchgrass is harvested, it can be removed by putting it into hot water and then removing lignin.
After the switchgrass has undergone pretreatment and special yeast fermentation, the annual ethanol production can reach 800 to 1,000 gallons, while the untreated ones yield only 150 to 250 gallons.
“Currently, ethanol is widely used to extract ethanol, but the annual production is only 500 to 600 gallons, and this new method can greatly promote the conversion of switchgrass to ethanol,†said chief expert Michael Ladish. .
